2012 Alberta Senate Nominee Election

Posted by on Apr 17, 2012 in Blog, Provincial News | 5 comments

On Monday, April 23rd – YOU will VOTE to elect not only a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), but also to elect THREE Senate Nominees for appointment to the Senate of Canada, to represent the province of Alberta.  You will receive two ballots when you go to your voting station – one for MLA and one for Senate.

Alberta is the only province to hold elections for nominees to the Senate. The three nominees with the most votes will become Senators-in-Waiting to be appointed to the Senate of Canada by the Prime Minister. (He is under no legal obligation to appoint the Senators-in-Waiting to Senate, but there’s a traditional precedent – three previous nominees have been appointed to Senate.)

There are thirteen Senate candidates registered in this election, nominated between three provincial political parties and independents:

Elizabeth Johannson – EverGreen Party
Len Bracko – Independent
Perry Chahal – Independent
William Exelby – Independent
David Fletcher – Independent
Paul Frank – Independent
Ian Urquhart – Independent
Doug Black – Progressive Conservative Party
Mike Shaikh – Progressive Conservative Party
Scott Tannas – Progressive Conservative Party
Raymond Germain – Wildrose Party
Rob Gregory – Wildrose Party
Vitor Marciano – Wildrose Party

  1. Hi,

I am the Campaign Manager for the Ian Urquhart Campaign. I don’t believe that we received your survey. Can you please send it to me and we’ll be happy to fill it out.

    Thanks,
    Ashley

  2. It’s pretty revealing to design a website with very faint very tiny print. It indicates that “looks” are more important than substance, which I find very disappointing. Surely we artists might be expected to read, too?

    • Val – Not sure we understand your comment. Are you referring to the text on our site, or on one of the Senate candidates’ sites? If you’re talking about this site, then we appreciate the feedback – for the size, you should be able to just zoom in, but we’d be happy to consider changing the font colour if it’s posing a problem.

  3. Just to correct some misinformation in the preamble:

    1. It is not traditional for the PM to appoint Senators based on the results of this list. One can argue it has only happened once, back in the 1980s (since the “term” for waiting senators was extended past what the Goverrnment stated at voting time for the previous slate). In fact, while there were senators in waiting, the PM of the time appointed our best Senator ever, who was not on the list: Tommy Banks!
    2. The Liberals, NDP, and even the fledgling Alberta Party refuse to run candidates. It is not a legitimate election.

I encourage everyone to get out and vote for your MLA and, while you’re there, spoil your Senator In Waiting ballot.

    • While your at it Anthony, why not spoil your MLA ballot too? Since it would be Liberal, it won’t count for anything in Alberta anyway.
